   Apple says 8GB of RAM on a Mac is equivalent to 16GB on a real computer. But how does an 8GB Mac perform objectively on simple tasks?

   Poorly, it seems.
   
   If you leave your browser open with a bunch of tabs while using Lightroom, expect things to take 2.5x longer. If you're using Final Cut Pro to edit video, up to 4x longer.
   
   There's absolutely no excuse for the existence of a $1600 laptop with only 8GB of RAM. 16GB of RAM is barely adequate for running any serious desktop task these days.

     @BowsacNoodle @Codeki @Aether It's a problem of most coders refusing to use multithreading and multiprocessing to full extent more than anything.

     @Aether But why the fuck would I only have 16 gigs of RAM?

     If I want a computer with actual power, I would put in more than 16 gigs. I have 16 gigs in my computer back when I had a GTX 960. My current desktop has 128 GB of RAM, and four open slots so I can stick in another 128 if I want.

     So like 10 or so years back, 16GB of ram was plenty for most use cases, and today it's low end? Seems like that's as much as problem with software as it is hardware. Higher res and more complex stuff is definitely a factor, but how much of this is just bloated code? I swear things were faster for regular use like 15 years back.

     @BowsacNoodle @Aether @Codeki @white_male interprocess communication. Not all applications require it, but if you are doing something where multiple processes need to maintain some kind of consistent internal state, interprocess communication is one way you might relay information about that state.

     @thatguyoverthere @Aether @Codeki @white_male I'm ignorant on what this means. Makes sense that it would be coders, but I have no idea what IPC is or how threading would relate to ram usage.
