we spent 50 years trying to hand the trappings of high tech civilization to stone age savages and all that came of it was a bunch of youtube videos about radiological accidents
when you're some shithole country full of mutts and indians, the choice isn't between exploiting your own resources and letting someone else do it. you *can't* do it yourself. you either let a foreign company in, or the resources stay in the ground

@PonyPanda there were a whole bunch of radiological accidents as the direct result of the collapse of the soviet union, stuff that was just left behind and the locals didn't know shit about

@deprecated_ii @PonyPanda if you build a man a fire, he will be warm for one night
if you give a man the core to a radioisotope thermoelectric generator, he will be warm for the rest of his life
-ancient chinese proverb
-
@deprecated_ii are you talking about Ukrainians and Chernobyl?
-
@PonyPanda no, small stuff. like radiation machines or systems being sold to third world countries for industry or medicine by first world companies, and the locals being incapable of maintaining it or understanding the dangers. so then there's a lost radiation source accident that messes people up, or someone bypasses the safety interlocks and gets toasted
we're going to have a lot of that in the first world too as things decline. like those idiots who got their eyes fried by UV lights at that concert recently, that's a "nobody understands how shit works" mistake, something that happens when they don't even know what dangers to check for
