They've gotten a local market for it for decades called COMIKET. Meanwhile, the closest that you have that's independent in the US are the underground comix scenes, and even then, a lot of them are just as "woke" or worse. Distribution and discussion online (especially for webcomics) is likely the only way indie comics get attention now.

A lot of current magaka and other artists that got hired to work on stuff did doujins
But the American copyright shit just wouldn't allow it
