I've said this before, but I'll say it again:
If you have a new account or an account that's recently moved instances, make sure to add a picture/avi, a bio, a header, and pin a toot or boost a couple things. Most of us won't follow an account that looks empty, in case they are bots, we just want to make sure you're an actual person.

If you do one thing from the list, pinning a post (or several posts!) is the best way of preventing an account looking blank.
Pinned posts will ALWAYS show up on other servers, even if the account is brand new and has no followers at all.

(By the way, pictures aren't necessarily indicative of anything as a lot of blind users just leave the profile picture blank.)

There is a feditios - and I am going to get this wrong, but I'll try - that says if no one on your server has yet interacted with another server, then no posts will show. But once you do interact or follow (I'm not sure which), then their posts from that point forward will show.
So, leap of faith!

Yeah, that's pretty much it!
If one person from your server has followed the account, all of its posts made after that moment will show up for everyone on that server, and show up in searches on those servers.
So, even a handful of followers will very greatly expand your potential audience.
