     Main problem with XMPP is that if the server the room is hosted on goes down, the whole room is gone. With Matrix the room is still there.
     
     The Matrix protocol is insanely slow and bloated, though.

     Or just designate a backup location in each chat's topic that everyone can bookmark in advance and join if the main room is failing for any reason.

     @Zerglingman would that work? I don't know how xmpp works very well and I have an account with my og handle, I wouldn't want to be switching accounts constantly or watchout on which account I'm speaking...

     I can't name an xmpp client which doesn't have sane multiaccount handling.

     This isn't an issue with the clients I use (pidgin and conversations). In the former case autocomplete is based on who's on my buddy list, and each buddy is associated with an account, in the latter case it maintains persistent conversations so you can just open from there and it'll be the same account.

     - Session -> https://getsession.org/
     Best alternative chat I've tried so far. Easy to set up. Available in mobile too.
     
     - Tox -> https://tox.chat/
     It allows for group chats, voice and video chats too. The clients for Android are all shit though. It's a little bit unreliable from my experience, but I tried it out many years ago.
     
     - Jami -> https://jami.net/
     Slightly more reliable than Tox but still far from being like one of the more mainstream options. Also P2P and all that jazz, same features as Tox.
