how do I use Matrix :hyperconfused:
I want to create a private group chat for me and friends but idk how to host my own thing
- luithe likes this.
-
@DarkMahesvara is everything we say encrypted?
Me and friends like to post loli and say nigger a lot
-
@Meemoo you don't need to host your own instance to make a private group. default is e2ee you can just create a private space
-
Basically discord will start automatically scanning all messages using Ai and will ban you if you're breaking rules so I'm trying to get my friends to switch to Matrix
-
@Spooke @DarkMahesvara yeah that's my worry.
I want to replace discord basically
-
@Meemoo @DarkMahesvara make sure to use an instance that isnt pozzed though. Matrix.org holds data on you for 7 years.
-
@DarkMahesvara I looked into the synapse guide and my brain just exploded :gura_dum:
I think I will give the main instance a try as a test.
end-to-end encryption is good enough tbh
-
@Meemoo the main instance matrix.org is hosted in UK so technically there laws apply. however nobody can access or listen in on private groups if they enable e2ee and none of the member get compromised so you can post whatever you want.
still its probably best to self host your own instance
-
@Meemoo regardless don't let the uncertainly stop you from at least trying it. anything is a privacy improvement over discord
-
@DarkMahesvara I've set it up and made a room :shiro_thumb:
Now the hard part is getting friends to join
-
@Meemoo yeah synapse is relatively complex and resource heavy. you can use docker images which are easier or even pay a 3rd party to host it for you but then you trust them as much as you would matrix.org
private communication services are a pain because the deeper you dig the more you realize there is not the perfect platform only ones that have different trade offs for example matrix only offers partial/no perfect forward secrecy meaning if someone, someday can decrypt 1 message (or get the keys) they could potentially decrypt all messages (for that room/conversation) but we talking multiple decades or high value targets
-
@supersid333 @DarkMahesvara yeah.
Looked like the main client and it supports all platforms so thought it was a safe bet
-
@Meemoo @DarkMahesvara Element chat?
-
@DarkMahesvara good catch
It had email notifa on by default :reimu_sigh:
-
@Meemoo :shiro_thumb: make sure everyone backs up there encryption keys (settings > security & privacy) which you will need to see messages when switching devices or getting logged out.
also disable "Enable email notifications for my@email.com" in notification setting (not sure if that's enabled by default) to not leak messages to your email provider.
-
@DarkMahesvara @supersid333 yeah we've tested it a bunch.
It's as close to discord as can be.
100mb upload limit (we used .iso files to test :shinobu_kaka: )
Streaming is not the best but it's serviceable
Voice is good
But yeah custom emojis and voice channels would be good
-
@Meemoo @supersid333 its the official client made by the devs also mainly developing and funding the matrix protocol. should be the most feature complete.
i think the only big discord feature missing from matrix are custom emotes and voice channel. those will probably get added eventually tho.
