   Funny how the asians are so asocial they require verbal labels like -nim/sama/etc in order to ensure they don’t misstep in conversational power dynamics

   But aside from the rare - often pointed - use of official titles we derive the same amount of information solely by the tone, the pace, the less blatant aspects of speech.

     @doublecart Still blatant. I was just thinking about how you can emphasise the consonants just a little bit to subtly signal to someone how much you respect them, combined with your tone, you can convey the fact you’re very unhappy and unimpressed with someone while seeming totally fine in a transcript.

     Play with it a bit and you get a feel for it, you go harder or deeper on the consonants, you space out the rhythm of their name differently, and those socialized well enough to parse it will know “oh he’s pissed”.

     Nicknames work too, but you can do it just fine w/ stuff like rick, though you have less to work with using the k. I got to thinking about it b/c I was talking to a john about paying up and I laid it on just a little too thick

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @doublecart A more controversial angle is gauging intelligence via lenition, or lack thereof. Vocabulary is a better indicator, but even identical sentences can betray someone’s intellect.

     I’m sure a lot of Americans with regional dialects will probably get mad at me saying this, though.
