So I decided to spend some of the day making a new laptop stand for my desk. The glue is still drying and I haven't attached the feet or put any finish on it yet but I think it's going to come out nice. Some of my joints are a little loose but it's been a while since I worked on something with tight tolerances. I think it will be fine to just set on the desk largely untouched. I had a 3 d printed one for a while and that worked until the plastic broke. I figure wood should hold up a bit better.
I used a strip of cherry I found in my garage. The first pic is before running it through the planer. All the joints are glued half laps.

All I can find for finish is teak oil but I think it will look good. I have linseed oil somewhere but god knows where

Last leg attached. I'll let this sit over night. By far the worst joint on the whole thing and I hope it'll hold without having to mess around with nails or anything.

@thatguyoverthere Looks nice.

@kekkerel thank you. I made a few mistakes, but as long as they aren't visible I'm content. I still have to sand and finish but I think we'll be ok. I have another to build for my own laptop (this one is for work) which will be more exposed on the backside but this is all anyone will usually see of this one.

@kekkerel yeah I have linseed somewhere but haven't been able to locate it. I have found my teak oil (3x cans) but I think I'd rather use the linseed. The teak oil doesn't really bring out the grain quite as much as I'd like.

@thatguyoverthere Are you going to opt for a deeply penetrating finish like tung or linseed oil?

@thatguyoverthere
I like in such a moist climate that I have to be careful with a linseed oil finish. The cure time is too long and if the ambient moisture is too high, it always comes out sticky. But it's easy to reapply as the piece ages.
I've never used teak oil. Tung oil has a much shorter cure time. Like a few days compared to a few weeks, potentially.

@kekkerel I have boiled linseed around here somewhere which usually dries pretty quick. I have a gallon or 2 but it doesn't seem to be with the rest of my finishes and paints. My basement is a fucking mess. Pain to find anything.
