The more I understand about astral mechanics (non-physical reality) the more anime makes sense, especially fighting anime. This is probably in part due to Japan's understanding of nature through Shinto and Buddhism. Both of those help create a good foundation.

Energy blasts, teleportation, telepathy, etc. Many of them have relevant elements, but usually focus more on semi-physical settings. That probably helps people relate to them more and understand better anyways.
