Try a third party app instead? They tend to be much better anyway. For example Ice Cubes, Toot!, Mona, Ivory are very widely used on iOS.

If you do prefer the official app, might be worth seeing if the delay is still there with an account on another server. If the other account is not delayed, then there may be a problem with your particular server rather than the app itself.
