@mastohost I somehow was convinced, until today, that I could subscribe to the public timeline of other servers, as a relay. It makes sense that it's not possible. But the relays I find are firehoses and I wanted to leverage the fact that there are thematic instances to seed my server with content that has a higher chance to be about a specific topic. That is the first misconception of the federation I have to rethink.
I set up a mastodon instance on masto.host for an association I am part of (not sure why I'm being vague, I basically have no opssec). Nice to see the backend of mastodon after years 😅
At some point I might self host it but the association is a bit stretched thin from the technical point of view, and @mastohost was such a breeze to set up that I wish I did it months ago.
