     The red one looks more like a moss to me but I've never seen one with twisty foliage like that, not around the Ozarks anyway

     I think you are right. Underneath all the red is a rock covered in moss. I've never seen moss do that. It looks like carpet fiber to me but I touched it and it is soft and squishy
