I’ve been listening to a watch podcast (disgusting, as they all are) because I wanted background noise at work, and I’ve come up with a new angle I will doggedly pursue with snobs and normies alike.
The episode from “Beyond the Dial” talks about the Omega Speedmaster, the “Moonwatch” as they never shut the hell up about it being, and its place in the overall space race. The Speedmaster IS a classic, but has grown to be synonymous with space travel because it was the only one officially approved for EVA operation by NASA back in the day.
until then, most astros and pilots used better, more function-first watches, stuff like the Breitling Cosmonaut w/ a 24 hour dial or the older Navitimer w/ a slide rule calculator. Since then, Omega has milked the moonwatch association to an absurd extent, drilling it into the industry in every mag, website, and year as they issue ten thousand minute variations of the same 1950’s mode.
