     @romin They kinda are. Well, DS didn't have a 2 player mode and I fucking hated that game
     
     I skipped the one on Wii
     
     3DS one apparently has atrocious level design
     
     I did purchase the Wii U one, mostly because there was very little else to purchase. The new power ups kinda elevated it above the rest, but still, ehh. The whole series feels... too safe, especially if you compare it to something like SMB3. But you're right, I did play that one 5 players and it's a freaking hoot
     
     But Wonder is really it. The levels to levels efforts is crazy and the level design is fantastic

     @coolboymew Mario Wonder almost feels like it was made specifically to dunk on NSMB. Hell, just its choice for the 2nd World theme screams NOT NSMB to me (all World 2s in NSMB were Deserts).
     
     It reminds me of how Xenoblade 2 was marketed, everything in its dedicated Direct carried with it the unspoken message of "This is NOT another X, this is a REAL Xenoblade game!".

     @coolboymew @romin New Super Mario Bros. to me is just the ultimate gaming Comfort Food, which is probably why even Smash Bros. U Deluxe has sold so extremely well. You know EXACTLY what you'll get, it'll be a decently good time, it'll be nostalgic and it won't really demand anything of you. It being 2D also makes it inherently more accessible than a 3D platformer (some people just plain suck at those, which might explain why Mario Odyssey's sales ceiling actually proved lower than BotW's, despite Mario normally ALWAYS outselling Zelda).
     
     Of course, NSMB is 100% the kind of game people who already own the console buy, it's NOT the kind of game people actually *buy* a console for, as Nintendo found out the hard way.

Unless they have proof of the Wii's sales massively spiking after the release of NSMB Wii (the DS game doesn't count, that's a handheld that was waaaay cheaper than the Wii U, it takes way less to boost its sales), it's a proven fact that NSMB games aren't great killer apps/system sellers.

     @coolboymew @romin Yeah, Mario Wonder is probably the last true, new Nintendo AAA Switch exclusive, if Metroid Prime 4 ends up on the Switch 2. The Switch will still keep getting plenty of games, including from Nintendo, just no more NEW, exclusive games on the level of TotK, Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 3, Metroid Dread etc.

     @coolboymew @romin Not as THE system seller tho, you'll want an S-Tier franchise for that, which Metroid is in terms of quality, but not sales. Mario Odyssey 2 or Mario Kart 9 would be ideal, since we KNOW it's not gonna be a new Zelda.

     @coolboymew @romin Yeah, but I think Nintendo got burned too badly by launching the GameCube with Luigi's Mansion and watching the console never managing to take off. Ever since that, it's always been either Zelda or mainline Mario.
     
     Oh, and I guess the 3DS also launched without a big name, but again, that launch kinda sucked too.

     But it's all about having a balanced launch window/first year
     
     Launch (window/year) with:
     -3D Mario: for everyone
     -Weird launch shit like Bomberman R (I bought that)
     -Prime 4: Stuff that console line hardcores go with
     -Try to get some known dev to release some big port that wasn't possible before (FF7 remake?)
     etc
     
     Fill as much niche as possible and your first year will be crazy, especially considering the crappy launches the other consoles had

     @coolboymew @romin If the Switch 2 comes out in 2024, it will also be the first time since 1996 when a new Nintendo console actually follows up a console that still enjoys strong momentum, rather than a console that's dead in the water (even the Wii was an empty shell of itself when the Wii U launched).
     
     And there's no way the Switch 2 gets hit with an N64-style game drought after its launch.

     They had to wait for 3D Land for 3DS to really get going. Mario Kart 9 Launch title feels like the biggest no-brainer ever, but Nintendo often does weird stuff.

     We’ve argued this before. We won’t agree on the core issue of whether Nintendo will or will not benefit from a new console right now. I still think the current switch is fine and the economy won’t support a mass migration to a new console unless it’s compatible with the existing catalog and has a low price tag.
