@thatguyoverthere I think they're cute dogs but I question the judgement of anyone who owns one. Maybe if you live in a place where you need a murderous guard dog, but even then I'd get something cooler like an Akita or a King Shepherd.

@BowsacNoodle I love my Akita. I still wouldn't leave him alone with a 4 yo unsupervised. It's not even that I think he wants to eat kids. I just don't trust the kid not to do something that sets a dog off. My daughter tried pulling the nails off of one of my dogs when she was 2.

@BowsacNoodle i Like pibbles, but I think most people take don't take dog ownership seriously enough. A lot of people also hit their dogs or use other negative re-enforcements for training which can lead to much less predictable behavior.
-
@BowsacNoodle I also think as sad as it is, rescues are not family dogs regardless of breed. In almost all cases they were raised poorly and very likely abused.
-
@thatguyoverthere @BowsacNoodle I have had good luck with rescue dogs, but the last one, mixed breed, was fully trained to be a good housemate before she arrived to me. This time, I had to travel to a different city not to get a pitbull; I personally like them, when they are socialized, but I simply do not have the physical strength to train a near-grown dog with the musculature of a pitbull, not even counting whatever history it would bring.
Plus, I travel fairly often, and I could not have a dog that people fear.
Children and animals always need supervision. It's odd when people don't understand this.

@HoolaHoolaNope @BowsacNoodle Rescues can be great. I just think the unclear history is something that is best handled by adults and if you have young kids at home a puppy is probably a safer option.
> Children and animals always need supervision
It's incredible to me how many people don't realize this.

@HoolaHoolaNope @BowsacNoodle My son had his arm broken by a pitbull (under his mother's care) because he was playing and the dog started attacking his half-brother who was much younger. Both of them got pretty messed up.
Also I think it's a safe assumption that if the dog has had it's ears clipped it was raised to fight.
-
@thatguyoverthere @BowsacNoodle Never thought about the clipped ears in that way. Good to remember.
I have seen so many of those stories, the pitbulls attacking, supposedly out of character, that I would not risk it. It's sad when a breed has been abused and neglected to the point of dangerous antisocial behavior, used culturally in a different context than what an adopter would hope. The safety of children comes first in the hierarchy, not the cuteness of dogs.
I knew a girl that was mutilated by a dog bite as a young child. Broken arms are not minor. Dogs are serious.

@HoolaHoolaNope @BowsacNoodle my son was older when it happened. He was rough housing with his younger sibling and the dog seemed to think the younger was attacking my son and went after him. I'm not entirely sure of the chain of events but that's my basic understanding.
