I'm still shocked and somewhat in disbelief at the way I had been treated, after giving it my all and asking for extremely little in return.

Remember, there is no loyalty in work. don't care if you work at a hospice for orphan children; your employers, your employees, your coworkers, they are not and never will be your friend. They aren't at work for you (or in this scenario the dying orphan children), they are at work for themselves.
