     @orifolger @steve Personally, yes, I see genocidal intent. How else do you interpret calling people “human animals”, cutting off food, water, and fuel to 2 million people, half of which are children, ordering half of them to relocate… it goes on.

     But I’m not an expert in genocide. Raz Segal is associate professor of Holocaust and genocide studies at Stockton University and endowed professor in the study of modern genocide. Here’s what he thinks:

     @thriveth No, not Arabs or Palestinians – murderous religious fundamentalists like Hamas. We have them in Turkey too. And yes, they are savages. That doesn’t mean that I, also a Turk (by birth, if not by nationality any longer), am a savage nor that all Turks are savages. But do we have savages among us? Yes. In fact, you’d likely be hard pressed to find a society that doesn’t.

     @aral OK but a suggestion: We stop calling the Palestinian side "barbarians" without calling the Israeli side, which is guilty of just as atrocious crimes - and on a larger scale - the same.

     I'm not disagreeing about the characterization of Hamas. But every time they are ritually condemned in this language of "savages" without the opposite side getting the same treatment, we feed into an old racist narrative that the Arabs are less civilized than the "Westerners".
