@SoyMagnus @SNEK @Zerglingman @apropos Oh, no, I'm not even a beginning Mandarin speaker. I understand just, like, a handful of Mandarin phrases and if I speak, native speakers just look at me like "What?" and then they figure out what I mean and they say "No, it's like blahblahblah" and it sounds exactly the same to me as the thing I said. I can't hear the tones. - Machismo repeated this.

@SoyMagnus @p @SNEK @Zerglingman ever hear Enigma's "Return to Innocence"? Sung by an Amerindian dude in the music video? It's an Taiwanese drinking song.
4 tones isn't so bad. Cantonese has more. And they're pretty distinct provided you can hear them: high tone, rising, low tone, and falling tone. The characters are also fun to write, and even easier to learn for Chinese than say for Japanese where they're much more overloaded with different readings. There's a funny 4chan post somewhere about how terrible it is to know Chinese and deal with Chinese business in the Chinese market, but you'll notice he doesn't bash the language at any point.
"na no ni" doesn't ring any bells though. -

@apropos @SoyMagnus @SNEK @Zerglingman You haven't heard someone tack a "に" onto the end of "X-なの"? Machismo likes this. -

@p @SNEK @SoyMagnus @Zerglingman Those are Japanese characters. I've heard lots of funny speech patterns in anime, but if there's a Chinese idiom like that it's just not coming to mind. My Chinese is pretty rusty though, and also there are large regional differences and slang. Machismo likes this. -

Yeah, Mandarin was a tangent. Up the thread, there was https://gearlandia.haus/media/c8bd0f779afe2aaf05196a87109829f38bf0ba10234167d2dc75f49811dffdc0.jpg , and Zerglingman was curious what the meaning of "nanoni" was.Machismo likes this.
