With Codeberg having severe growing pains, maybe it's time to ask again: anyone want to start a U.S. based code forge co-op? Keeping systems like this small is the way to scale, not just making Codeberg the new GitHub.

I’ve asked on the private members’ (as I’m supporting it both privately and with Small Technology Foundation) that they stop new sign ups at least until they fix the performance issues and, beyond that, to consider setting an account limit beyond which they will not scale (and instead use their resources to help other code forges that use Forgejo) but, sadly, it doesn’t seem to have been met with much enthusiasm.

Sam Whited (sam@social.coop)'s status on Sunday, 15-Jan-2023 20:50:00 JST Sam Whited @aral this is something I've had trouble convincing a lot of small co-ops and self-hosted sort of things to do. Conventional wisdom is that all the things can be signed up for all of the time and that artificially limiting growth to something sustainable is bad. And I get it, it's annoying if you go to sign up and it says you can't, you're likely to just stick with GitHub instead because it's convenient in that case where you might have tried something else on a whim before, but still…

Sam Whited (sam@social.coop)'s status on Sunday, 15-Jan-2023 21:14:00 JST Sam Whited @aral we can easily loose by not considering it though. I'm with you that we need to keep things small, and limiting growth to prevent a bad user experience is probably a good idea, but no one being able to sign up for a better way is a valid concern too.

Available for all relevant platforms. I run it on ARM and Intel. The #sqlite and #tcl source repositories are #fossil based.
