Contemporary movies therein in the West were, by contrast, extremely sterile and formulaic. This is perhaps due to the "safety" of larger budgets? Or censors? Or a lack of imagination or desire for experimentation? I'm unsure. But, their Eastern counterparts were, comparatively, very experimental, therefore, hold up quite a bit better when viewed today. I wonder if it was the need to "do more with less". It all reminds me of German cinema in the 1910s and 1920s in its similarities of exploration in the medium and being unafraid to experiment with the genre.
