   A couple of our incubated chickens are roosters and they are starting to learn to crow. I'm just waiting for the turkey to grow a bit more and we'll be culling the lot (probably around 10 birds)

     We've got 5 young chickens plus one (maybe 2) adults charged with the crime of eating the eggs, 3 ducks, a goose and a turkey this year. Not too bad.

     @TinyHouse4Life yeah I caught the first one and it turns out she has some damage to her eyes which I think led her to hanging out for the easy food instead of wandering around in the yard looking for bugs. I don't know who started picking up the slack once ingot her out but for a few weeks now I've gotten almost no blue eggs. Several times I have found shells so they're definitely getting eaten.

     @HebrideanHecate @TinyHouse4Life I think they've got a taste for it. I put out an excellent organic seed mix, oyster shell, and other nutrients for them to eat. Our shells are always nice and hard (odd exceptions exist) so I don't think anyone is lacking.
     
     I'm also only finding the blue eggs pecked out. Never brown or white. I'm not used to a discriminating palette that only picks eggs of a certain color like that.

     @HebrideanHecate @TinyHouse4Life yeah truth be told we usually try and add a few new babes to the flock each year anyway and during the summer we run at the legal limit for how many birds we can have so downsizing in the winter will give us room in the spring and lower feed costs a bit during the low point in egg production.

     @thatguyoverthere @TinyHouse4Life My cousin’s pullets are all doing nicely, they littlest one loves her food! They had 2 runaway hens who came back with huge families, they have given some of them away and kept the rest, “baby” as this one is called is, by the sounds of it, going to be what we always called the “petty” hen, she comes into the house and sits preening on the floor.

     @HebrideanHecate @TinyHouse4Life I don't have any that come inside, but I have a chicken and a duck that constantly get out of the fence and the duck had 2 successful hatches this year (only 2 eggs in the last batch, but something like 15 the first time). The chicken sat on a nest but I think something must have gotten to it (should have stayed in the fence area)

     @TinyHouse4Life @HebrideanHecate yeah she's a sneaky girl. Even when you know where her nest is it takes a few seconds to find her patterns. I had to literally point at her from about 2 ft away for someone else to be able to see her last nest.

     @HebrideanHecate @TinyHouse4Life They really are. It's cool because they learn to trust me through her. She brings them up to me for treats. Last week they started walking up to me on their own. Last clutch she raised they'd all come running every time I was out because I'd run water on the ground for them to play in.
