Ideally, we’d be funding alternatives that don’t rely on advertising from the commons, for the common good. (I’m not holding my breath.)
Until then, some of us are scraping together such alternatives with little budget/support… maybe some of those will make a difference 🤷♂️

Touché ... I really don't want those foundations, no... but I do want to break up companies that control search and advertisements, though. What would you propose? -

And yet I find the almost complete lack of imagination when it comes to alternatives that don’t bind the information and tools we need for a functional democracy to the profit motives of corporations to be rather stunting for the potential of our species.

Small, unobtrusive and privacy respecting ads like the ones on readthedocs can be a good way to fund infrastructure without paywalling everything
