Long story short, fuck AMD.- :awoo_tired: shotgun snuggler :clownpiece_smug: likes this.

I try to "root for the underdog", and I know it is healthier for the PC world to have something besides Intel and Nvidia, and AMD tends to give you more bang for your buck.
But everytime there is some sort of crap happening, either with the processors and chipset or with the GPUs, and I'm starting to get real tired of this shit. -
Immahnoob (immahnoob@varishangout.net)'s status on Thursday, 05-Oct-2023 21:14:32 JST Immahnoob @Suzu @Ronnie21093 @kamehamic Are you going to do that? Lower the speed of the PCIe? -
kamehamic (kamehamic@poa.st)'s status on Thursday, 05-Oct-2023 21:14:33 JST kamehamic @Suzu @Ronnie21093 I have a B550 and I had issues with the sound but I solved them, I use headphones that at first were connected to the back of the case but once I switched to a pcie4 graphic card, during heavy graphic loads the sound started crackling. Solution? switch the to the front connector or use a USB sound card (I do this for the mic input).
Also probably? relevant I'm on linux. -
Ronnie21093 (ronnie21093@varishangout.net)'s status on Thursday, 05-Oct-2023 21:14:33 JST Ronnie21093 @kamehamic @Suzu I have a MSI Mag B550M Bazooka with a Ryzen 5 5600X, and previously used a Ryzen 3 3100 since 2020 up to the start of this Summer. Oddly enough, I've never had issues with sound crackling, and I know I've played some games that make decent use of my GPU. I've always used jack headphones.
If it is relevant, I'm on Windows 10. -

And it's not even "graphic intensive games". Cyberpunk works fine, for instance, but a game like Rift Wizard, or even reading pdf files, crap everything.
It seems the B550 and X570 chipsets have been having USB and audio issues for quite a while for some people, and AMD has been promising to fix this but so far nothing. The solution, as it stands, is to force the PCIe to work at a lower speed. -
Suzu :miku_happy: (suzu@varishangout.net)'s status on Thursday, 05-Oct-2023 21:14:34 JST Suzu :miku_happy: @Ronnie21093 So, the problem I had was that the audio crackled and cut and stuttered in certain situations, and it actually made the whole system stutter when it happened. There were games that were absolutely unplayable.
At first I thought the problem was in my DAC, but I couldn't really test it because I didn't have a replacement and the cable of my IEM was a balanced one that wasn't compatible with the regular analog audio output of the mainboard. So I kinda lived with the problem, trying to see if there were any kind of software solutions for it. And it turns out there are people complaining for years that this chipset is giving them USB and audio problems, and AMD was promising to fix it but nothing was happening, and the workaround they found was forcing PCIe to 3rd gen. But I tried doing it and it didn't work.
Anyways, I got a new DAC and a new regular cable, and started doing some tests, and found out that it really is a problem with the chipset crapping itself with USB or audio, and I was absolutely bewildered because I have the latest BIOS update and surely this 3 year old problem would already be solved by now.
Doing some research, turns out it wasn't solved. And not only that, but some people reported that they only solved it when they forced PCIe to 2nd gen. Then I tried doing it. And it worked.
In hindsight, this problem started after I got a GPU. I haven't realized it at the time because I had also changed my audio setup, so I thought the problem was there, but no, actually the PCIe bus completely shat itself with the GPU.
So, yeah, 3 year old bug that affects a lot of people, and AMD's solution is "reduce your bus speed to year 2007 levels". Fuck them. -

Suzu :miku_happy: (suzu@varishangout.net)'s status on Thursday, 05-Oct-2023 21:14:34 JST Suzu :miku_happy: @Ronnie21093 I've been using AMD for years now, and there is always some detail ruining the experience of someone. Sometimes you're lucky and don't get it, sometimes you get the crap prize.
Unfortunately RMA is not an option because I only noticed the problem years after buying the board, since it only started when I plugged a GPU in it.
The solution is to buy a new kit in the future. And it won't be AMD. -
