cool_boy_mew (coolboymew@shitposter.club)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Oct-2023 05:44:18 JST cool_boy_mew @meeper unfortunately I'm not sure if I can manage that without breaking the distro -
meeper (meeper@udongein.xyz)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Oct-2023 05:44:19 JST meeper @coolboymew
tbh you should use any other init system than that; openrc/s6 based ones
Idk how really sysV scripts are organised and I think its distro specific -

meeper (meeper@udongein.xyz)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Oct-2023 05:47:45 JST meeper @coolboymew @hj thats basically what systemd or any init does -
meeper (meeper@udongein.xyz)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Oct-2023 05:52:33 JST meeper @coolboymew @hj yeah a lot processes need to be lainched at boot or things have to be done which are basically just a series of commands
Sysv was ditched because it was basically just shell scripts and that can overcomplocate and the way it is done is slow af
Systemd is hated because it did too much bloat™ and had some bad™ decisions and typical redhatwarecool_boy_mew likes this. -

Proud owner of a potato sack :flag: (hj@shigusegubu.club)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Oct-2023 06:09:41 JST Proud owner of a potato sack :flag: @meeper @coolboymew and since there isn't really a "single right way to do it" complexity increases more and more, does service depend on another service, does it need to be run as a separate user, does it run in foreground or forks off and creates a PID file, what to do to stop it, how to check if it crashed, do you need to create multiple instances of it, does it needs to be started automatically or triggered by a socket, etc etc etc etc.
Only real complaint IMO is that systemd is run as pid 1, and if pid 1 crashes - everything crashes, and increase of code complexity of pid 1 theoretically increases crash probability. There's also complaint about somewhat monolithic design of it (although "systemd the project" and "systemd the (pid 1) process" are two different things and not everything is built into pid 1 as far as I understand) and hard dependency on it, but linux kernel isn't exactly much different either.cool_boy_mew likes this. -
meeper (meeper@udongein.xyz)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Oct-2023 06:25:50 JST meeper @hj @coolboymew yeah thats all fair
but systemd genuinely goes too far and forces dependency on it way beyond initit stuff and has quite a few bad design choices for a lot of people
also sysd just forces a particular prespective of a unix desktop and is less mouldable when it really doesnt need to be.cool_boy_mew likes this. -
