Operating •and• developing Mastodon on this budget is nothing short of amazing.
It’s also unsustainable and we should make sure we don’t just pay for our third party Mastodon clients but donate to the core project.

@kzodasnowman @finestructure Always has been!
@finestructure wait, popular gaming YouTube animator Dopatwo contributed to Mastodon? Whaaaa
@njan @Selena @finestructure @Gargron
better than nothing but they are both centralized services and not FOSS. what I'm imagining is something like a new protocol ala #ActivityPub but for money transfer. people freely give out their Bitcoin address. we should be able to do that with something like myaccount@mybank.com. no need for crypto. just plug that into your banking app, set an amount and decide if it's recurring or not. or even better, tie it into reader/player apps that auto distribute.

There‘s https://opencollective.com/mastodon :)
There one can even pay a one-time-sum — or monthly.
I‘m not 100% sure that it’s really ending up in the hands of Mastodon, though, as it’s not named on the official donation page. @Gargron, can you confirm if that opencollective account is a legit one?
@wjmaggos @finestructure
It would be nice to have a reliable easy-to-use #patreon alternative.
Patreon has been great for years, but they took on way too much VC-money so inevitably they've come under pressure to find ways to squeeze a higher profit out of the creator/patron interaction (when most people using it just want it to be a place that facilitates 'sending $$ every month to a creator I like', and only keeping a small transaction fee for themselves)
we need a decentralized donation system that we can tie into all these services. small automated donations from millions of people to FOSS developers and open access content creators will change the world.

An extended version of ActivityPub can easily support economic transactions. I published a specification for such protocol here: https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src/branch/main/fep/0837/fep-0837.md, and it can be used to build things like eBay and Patreon, but federated. It also can be used in conjunction with traditional (non-crypto) financial services, though in that case the system won't be really decentralized.
@wjmaggos Yes, something like FedNow or Stripe... But I agree that a self-hosted instance that depends on such API is better than a monolithic platform like Patreon.
@silverpill @finestructure @Selena @njan @Gargron
thank you. can you elaborate on your last sentence? because something like #FedNow would need to be involved? it would be much better than what we have now, right?
