Tire dust, a largely overlooked aspect of vehicular pollution, is found to be a major contributor to ocean microplastics, according to a recent study cited in an article from The Drive. The study found that 78% of these microplastics originate from synthetic tire rubber. Moreover, electric vehicles, often seen as eco-friendly alternatives, produce more tire dust due to their heavier weight and high torque, exacerbating the problem. The harmful particulates from tires can lead to neurological effects, behavioral changes, and abnormal growth in marine animals, and can also infiltrate the human bloodstream.
