Look at Linux these days and how many layers of abstraction and constantly running services there are - to things that were already abstracted!! - because code monkeys couldn't handle ALSA, X, rc.d, and even the fucking crontab.

  I still prefer X11 and a nice startx script to Wayland.

  @p @sysrq @MK2boogaloo @istvan Can confirm nobody taught me how to use crontab early on, so I would use long-running loops for scheduled tasks, until I got sufficiently sick of it drifting that I decided to actually try using the tool that was already there for that purpose.

  That is kind of an amazing statement; either this "crontab guru" doesn't know how cron works, or it's a cynical ploy based on the assumption that there are people with money that don't know how cron works.

  This part is kinda useful though. That was an issue I had early on; IIRC setting a .py (with a #!/bin/python) +x and just shoving the path to it in cron doesn't actually work for some reason, so I had to spend some time trying to figure out if it was crashing during run or just not running at all.
  Or something like that, at any rate. The issue was that it wasn't starting. Maybe cron was logging that error somewhere.

  Yes, it was. In fact, you can even have it send you email. By default, it's just local, no mail server involved, it just puts it in /var/spool/mail and you can check it with mutt or something, whatever client can read mbox format.
