   I guess it does make sense because they were going to foreign shores they would be more likely to get diseases back then so it makes sense for them to have interest in bathing all the time to possibly get rid of those germs.

     In fact the word for Saturday in many nordic languages {Lørdag/Lördag} more or less means "washing day"
