   @robby Yeah, 300 is nothing.

   I wonder if it is starting to make sense to have one's own search engine?
   Disk space is cheap, bandwidth has grown a lot. And if I know ahead of time what to not(!) index (porn, furries, fashion, food, ...) it doesn't seem like a bad idea.

     Not exactly what I had in mind, but thanks anyway.

     I wasn't thinking about searching search engines, but crawling the Internet on my own, and building up a 100TB index on my own server without touching Google et al.

     @niclas @charliebrownau @robby you could look at yacy. I get better results from searx but I think that's just because I've never really tried to improve my own yacy index.

     Well, if searx are delegating to the commercial engines (as I understood it), then it is not surprising.

     The fact that Yacy is (was?) written in Java gives me a lot of advantage, since it is my primary language.

     @niclas @thatguyoverthere @charliebrownau @robby The problem with yacy is running you're own search engine can be quite a pain and resource intensive. Even if you use the community net the results are not the best.

     @niclas @charliebrownau @robby yeah searx[ng] is a meta search engine so it doesn't have it's own index. YaCY has a shared (decentralized) index so you don't have to start from 0, but you can also limit searches to just what's in your local index IIRC. It's been a little while since I've looked at the docs and of course things are always subject to change. I am not great with java myself, but I imagine that would give you a bit of an edge.

     @dcc @niclas @charliebrownau @robby yeah these are kind of the reasons I dont' still have one running. That said, if more people did use it the results would probably improve over time. Chicken and egg problem.

     Every programming language can be shown to be useless, and sputtering vile is not building your credibility at all. And in this case, you don't even bring forth the weaknesses of these languages, let alone what is better. "utter goyslop rubbish" is AFAIK not even valid words put together.
