     @Zerglingman I would say that counts. I think a step above that is when you look at a recipe as a guide but then start improvising off of that.
     
     I would also clarify that there is a big gap between cooking and baking. I think baking is much, much harder.

     Improvisation is easy when you know why to try different things for different ingredients. Alton Brown made me a great cook.

     Then stuff gets really tasty, just how I like it. This is why we rarely eat out anymore. Even non-chain joints would never make it to Valhalla on Fury Road...
