     WhatsApp was created due to Apple and Google's lack of consistency and focus on their own messaging apps instead of working on standards. So now, everyone is at the mercy of one of the worst privacy offenders.

     @nixCraft I was using Whatsapp back when it cost a dollar a year. Before Facebook owned them. Few years ago when they wanted to merge account data, i deleted WhatsApp and moved to [Signal](https://signal.org/)

     Turns out signal was made by one of WhatsApps original creators. He left Facebook owned Whatsapp due to their privacy violations and aggressive monetization. Heres the story:

     @nixCraft no one needs WhatsApp. Signal and telegram are an improvement over WhatsApp. Getting enough people to switch would take a coordinated educational/outreach campaign, which is not something that people are apt to do unfortunately.
