     @arstechnica …because the OEM was the lowest bidder and *was* the lowest bidder because they used the “crap we already have lying around because we build for all the other knockoffs”-method of manufacturing.

     It’s $500 because, hey, you might as well make something like a profit margin. That way when it’s discontinued for slow sales you get some small victory or whatever is explainable in a board meeting.
