It was a holdover that only lasted a few years, but I have seen one old timer keep it going because he liked the weight and operated as a sheriff at home - no extended maint. concerns that way.
Early GWOT started seeing the blocks, the bayo mounts, and that ugly old surefire thing, but they add weight since few were ever optimized for that. I vaguely remember there being concerns about vibration too, since you used incandescent bulbs? I feel like I heard complaints as a kid that they were way too expensive to keep replacing all the time, but who knows. Maybe have been civ lights adapted to guns
