     - free economy
     - basically British common law
     - conservative social values in public, but an accepted underground culture that can do whatever
     - no politics through some kind of nondemocratic system
     
     I actually wonder if there's any country that used to be poor, then switched to being a democracy and got rich.

     @hj @cjd Japan hits many of these points, but this recipe doesn't have to be followed for every successful country. It does seem to work with pretty much anything though, be it swamp or desert.
