An argument I've seen is that the "capitalism game" ended after enough real wealth was consolidated. Then the people had to be paid in credit to extend the life of the system.
This argument does overlap a bit with arguing that capitalism was never good but I do think it goes a long way to explaining where things went wonky in big ways.
CJ Hopkins argues that "Global Capitalism" eliminates despotic values (anything that prevents/protects people from all walks of life from assimilation into a single global market) as an efficiency mechanism, and that it's merely gotten so far that people start to want to maintain some of those values.xianc78 likes this.
