     @coolboymew they used to get it as a byproduct from decaf coffee, where the beans would be "washed" in a solvent (used to be dichloromethane (lol), nowadays typically hypercritical carbon dioxide) and the pure caffeine would be recovered from the solvent. nowadays they extract it from various other caffeine plants (e.g. tea leaves or guarana) because energy drink demand is higher than supply through decaf coffee production.
