Bacula has a built in speedtest to for the network between backup client and storage... there's so many little gems in here that you just don't get with other software
- Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this.

@feld I love bacula but I do wish they had an option for block level backups. It can help speed up and keep differential sizes down.
-
@SlicerDicer @feld :thinkingcat: interesting. I've only ever used the file level backups. Need to rtfm

@thatguyoverthere @feld

I read a document on this it does exist.
-
@feld @SlicerDicer I forgot they had an "enterprise" offering. Such garbage
-
actually i think that's only available in their bacula enterprise stuff tho
-
I've tried almost every backup software that exists and so far this is the only one that doesn't make me worry about my backups being correct or being able to successfully *restore* data when I need it
-
@feld @SlicerDicer @thatguyoverthere I was thinking of using Bacula or at least more about it because it's used at a place I worked at. But I don't like their business model.
-
@feld @SlicerDicer I guess. I think there are ways to make money without proprietary bits. I also think code should be open generally. Squirreling away the best bits for pay and marketing it in a way that makes it almost exclusively available to large businesses doesn't seem aligned with that.

Yeah it's too bad that Kern Sibbald wrote software that's valuable enough to support his family :rms2:
