@xerz I still think Unity is one of the best desktops of all time tbh: a vertical dock? A menu that merges with titlebars? A top bar that merges with both? It really makes unbelievably efficient use of screen real estate. The HUD that enables you to search menus is also a great idea.
It was not and is not perfect by any means, but no other desktop has attempted anything similar.
You can probably get KDE on a similar level, but with a fair bit of hacking.
Got my first phone.
It was a Galaxy Ace.
Also, in September, I started distrohopping! The first jump I ever made was from Ubuntu to ( :blobcatdrums: ) @elementary 0.2 Luna!
I also did further experimentation of my own, in preserving the spirit of the year. Like trying WindowMaker on my iPad (again, VNC). Or learning Forth on it (I didn’t get it but it was fun to write in RPN). Or writing my first Python “program” (a library that expected you to run it manually from the REPL), a wrapper for the REST API of a Bitcoin gambling site on it (I was ahead of the #gaming trends :blobcatdab: ). Or making mockups for Chrome Web Apps, like whatever the hell was this.
Because it was a year of experimentation, I also did stupid shit. Like making the first third-party Ubuntu Touch app of all time, afaik.
It was awful.
It was a year of experimentation: this is when Ubuntu Touch was announced, the first attempt at convergence, leading to the failed crowdfunding for the Ubuntu Edge (ye, remember that?). It felt like the crossover between desktop, laptop, tablet and phone was bound to happen, and it was something I focused on for a lot ever since.
Ah, wasn’t the Surface just great :blobcatuwu:
I also played a bit with OS X, but not really: here’s all the ever-so-slightly interesting stuff I could find right now
That was also around the time that I got started with Windows 8.1 and got a Surface Pro 2.
You understand why I was excited now? LOOK AT ALL THE COLORY STUFFS HAPPENING
It was a cool time of early exploration, I would do stuff like learn about Plan 9, play Sonic fangames, or absolutely suck at modelling in Blender :blobcatrainbow:
