@CSB@useless_idiot NATO has never done jack shit for the USA. It's nothing but a burden. And everything we did after 9/11 was wrong. NATO needlessly puts US security at risk by dragging us into Europe's bullshit
It doesn't matter that much what I sound like, more the impression you make on your new friends. Russia has been heavily pushing the narrative that their war against the Ukrainians is caused by the USA, as well as that it is a war against NATO.
If the USA steps out now, Xi, Modi, etc. would consider the USA a pushover. Maybe you yourself are too old to feel the consequences, but your children or grandchildren would.
@useless_idiot@SirAnthony@CSB we have been instigating shit over there for a while, just like we do everywhere. Stepping out now means that the fuel that feeds the fire is quickly spent and not replenished.
As far as consequences for our kids or grandkids, who knows. I might argue that the centralization of power in transnational groups like NATO has the potential for worse outcomes too. It's not like NATO has done fuck all to prevent terrorism or improve national security for member states. All they've done is antagonize the paranoid neighbors and suck the wealth out of the hands of people to put in the hands of the war industry.
Thinks are getting hard, and the instinct to just run away and hide is strong then. But that is probably not a good long-term strategy. If it isolates itself, US assets/interests will be picked off one-by-one, first abroad then domestically.
Europe is distancing itself from China on the request of the USA.
@useless_idiot@CSB Economic relations should be wide open. Security obligations are bullshit. We should close all of our foreign bases. Let Europe take care of itself.
I don't think that stepping out will solve anything. It may freeze the conflict for a while, but this conflict is older than the USA, and the shit the Kremlin has been pulling for the last 20+ years, especially the last 1.5 years, will make real peace impossible. There are also dormant sentiments (Crim Tatars, Ethno-Russians, Azov-bat, Paganists, etc.) awakened that make peace without power almost impossible.
@useless_idiot@thatguyoverthere@CSB I know you neocons believe that this is all one sided and Russia is pure evil. Which is why getting out of NATO and avoiding entanglements in these conflicts is the only move that makes sense for the USA. Let Europe learn to figure out its bullshit ethnic hatreds without us financing it. We have our own problems to worry about and Europe doesn't do fuck all to help us with that. There is no such thing as a defensive alliance
@useless_idiot@thatguyoverthere@CSB NATO is a tool of empire. The reason it isn't doing more is that the US does not want a hot war with Russia. Your eagerness for WWIII to break out is disturbing
And to be fair to the concept of NATO, the treaties, they were put up to make the burden of an effective military for each country lighter. The bureaucratic organization of course does everything to continue its existence and importance, as every bureaucratic organization does. We have to be aware of that, and many Western European countries are quite naïve in this regard.
...but they are not war-mongers. Right now there are Russian drones falling on Romania. These would be a great casus belli, but NATO is hardly paying any attention to it.
@useless_idiot@thatguyoverthere@CSB lol you're literally agitating for WWIII. I am a significant critic of US militarism, which is exactly why NATO needs to die. For someone who claims to not be a neocon, you sure talk like one.
Nah, you are just underinformed and overconfident.
Russia just accidentally dropped some drones on a NATO country. If your worldview was correct we'd very soon (a few days) see a big open NATO reaction, like bombing a military base in Sebastopol.
@useless_idiot@SirAnthony@CSB NATO/US is literally doing everything it can to keep the ukraine conflict hot while also avoiding triggering another whole world war, this time with nuclear weapons on all sides. If NATO were interested in peace we would stop funding the conflict.
Nah, Lubyanka is pure evil, and the Kremlin is partially. Russia as a country is fine. And I am not a neocon, I opposed the 2nd Gulf War, as well as staying in Afghanistan. Calling me that indicates a very black-and-white worldview. Just like "the enemy of my enemy is my friend".
The city where I used to live takes a big hit financially for not selling wafer-stepper machinery to China, at the request of the USA.
I assume that by NATO you mean the NATO countries. Stop funding Kyiv really would just freeze the conflict in place only to flare up again in a few years at best. At worst it will increase the Kremlin efforts and they would take a big piece of Ukraine.
A city nearby where family of mine lives has been threatened with nuking by Kremlin propagandists on TV, so I am not callous at all.
@useless_idiot@CSB@SirAnthony yeah NATO is nothing more than a collection of nations so if I say they are doing something I am referring to the backing nations.
Stopping the shipping of funny money to Ukraine doesn't prolong the conflict. that's silly. They only reason it's gone on as long as it has is because we've been pumping military power in through the back door as they get blowed up on the front. How many billions or trillions of dollars should we put our kids into debt to help a country as corrupt as Ukraine?
I'm not saying Russia should have the land they might take from Ukraine were we not involved, but it's not my job (or my grandkids) to protect their borders, especially considering we basically refuse to protect our own. We are basically pumping water from their sinking ship into our own and we're all going to drown as a result.
The point is simply that Ukraine can not sustain a war without our money. Perhaps that means they lose territory. I don't know why that's something I need to concern myself with. How does it impact me (preferably a non-propaganda infused explanation)? How much money is protecting Ukraine from Russia worth? Why is it worth that much?
@feld@CSB@useless_idiot@thatguyoverthere the point is that we should not be fanning the flames of war. It is not a US problem. It is a Europe problem. And from here it looks like Ukraine should fold. They have no path to victory
> make sure war isn't profitable for the aggressor
by devaluing our own currency? :brain0:
The rest of that is fear mongering from the establishment. It's the same shit we've been hearing for ever. Meanwhile we did nothing to slow their march toward energy dominance. We even went so far as to sell them our weapons grade uranium.
Russians are not under my bed. They aren't in my walls. Fighting a proxy war to keep them busy isn't protecting the homeland. I would argue it's likely to antagonize them and make them feel like they are being backed into a corner. I would rather not needlessly poke bears.
One big reason is not to let a country profit from a war it starts. That would justify mass killings as a means to resolve international conflicts.
Another reason is that it would make Russia more powerful and likely to direct it's attentions to other countries that are big USA trading partners. During the Soviet times they put nationals everywhere, and they are now claiming that they are oppressed.
A third reason is cultural links, prob not as important for USA.
@thatguyoverthere@feld@CSB@SirAnthony@useless_idiot we are in debt. We are in no position to lend money to other countries. Simple as that. You don't take out credit cards to help someone else's family without absolutely screwing your own financially. That's what Joe does every time he sends more money. He takes out another half billion credit card, cashes it out, and tosses the bill on our tax pile. Fuck this.
@feld@CSB@useless_idiot@thatguyoverthere "Genocide" is a propaganda word used by war mongers. There is no indication of any such thing. Your comment is a paranoid fever dream. You want the world to be better? Cordial diplomatic relations and productive economic relationships between USA and Russia are a better path.
Is genocide peace? Is destruction of an entire culture peace? Just because there isn't active military action between two states doesn't really mean "peace" if the Ukrainian people are essentially being held hostage.
I'd wager their wheat is enough of an incentive (25% of the world's production). If Russia gets it, they will hold Africa hostage. We do not want that level of instability popping off. The damage to world markets will far eclipse the cost of sending Ukraine money and weapons. Not including the damage to the African continent's political stability.
This is one sticky area where Russia and China seem to disagree a bit. China is working on exploiting Africa's resources and Russia's threatening to crush their ability to provide resources.
@feld@CSB@useless_idiot@olmitch@thatguyoverthere It's the kind of insurance old people buy in a late night cold sales call. And the pitch is equally valid. It empties your savings and offers nothing of value in return.
@feld@CSB@SirAnthony@useless_idiot What exactly is the plan to actually stop genocide? Let's say that's Russia's goal in the first place (it's nothing like what they have stated is their goal but we'll just pretend for a moment). How does our prolonging the conflict stop a genocide from occurring? How much money will it take? Are we always just going to be at war with East Asia now?
As far as Ukranian wheat goes, Russia can sell it just the same as Ukraine can. I think you know my feelings on centralized food production already, but I'm not a fan. I hear you that it's used to feed Africa, but I also think that feeding people rather than teaching them how to feed themselves is a power move. This idea that it's my duty to protect the world and make sure everyone can eat the GMOs until their heart's content is kind of bizarre to me tbh.
We've been exploiting Africa for resources for quite a while. As much as I don't want to see a world where China is in a more dominant position, at least they are building infrastructure in Africa while they plunder.
Yeah, Obama and the Clintons (and that airhead Merkel) were buddying up to Putin for a long time. Similar spirits or something. It's so weird that the Democrats are so against Moscow now, maybe they finally found an unambiguously good cause.
Banding together to poke bears is the way cavemen protected their villages.
> Fighting a proxy war to keep them busy isn't protecting the homeland.
If the result of letting them waffle stomp Ukraine is trillions of dollars of damage to the US economy it's all the same to them. Physical security and economic security are treated the same. I don't necessarily agree but you can easily follow the logic when the economic damage will inevitably lead to worse outcomes for Americans, including early deaths for some.
It's kinda gross though because it's hard to draw the line and it justifies our meddling everywhere.
To overuse the metaphor: When an old bear goes crazy of hunger he'll attack more and more people. When an old gangster state has oligarch mouths to feed it needs more land and resources.
The collapse of the US (economy) has been predicted at least since my father (babyboomer) was young. Somehow the American spirit is real, it will get back up.
@feld@CSB@SirAnthony@useless_idiot I tend to agree. That isn't to say I wish harm on Europeans or anything, but I think the idea that everyone needs to be entirely codependent on one another instead of being relatively stable on our own and just trading on top of that seems wonky to me.
@feld@CSB@useless_idiot@thatguyoverthere As if we need Europe more than they need us. They're parasites. They can't sever economic relations with us. We don't need them
We haven't made even the smallest effort with Russia.
It starts with not funding wars, triggering insurance and regime change in their neighbors, and all the other dirty shit we do. Closing military bases in Europe would be a great start
The kidnapping is real, or at least the ICJ accuses Maria Lvova-Belova of it. Turning those stupid mean Ukrainian farmers into smart big city Russians is a big part of the plan, to help with demographic problems.
What have they stated as their goal?
We (Euros) used to build railroads and schools in Africa as well, colonization wasn't always purely exportation. And I have seen the infrastructure projects of China in Africa, it's a racket to get them into debt.
@useless_idiot@feld@CSB I have never implied that farmers are stupid or mean, nor have I ever suggested that city life is in any way preferable to a rustic lifestyle.
As for their stated goals, my understanding was that they felt there was some injustice going on in some areas of Ukraine which was affecting Russian people living in Ukraine. I am not a big war enjoyer so I don't scrape for much on the whole thing. I know that the US has meddled over there quite a bit for years. We may have been running bio-warfare... sorry dual use technology... labs in the Ukraine (at least according to our own government). Our president seems to have received personal compensation through his son for some dealings over there as well. From here it seems likely that there is a lot of corruption and US infiltration in the Ukranian government, and if the interests of the US/UA infiltrators are to subvert Russia then that means we are on their doorstep.
Everyone thinks if they read the paper they are informed on what's actually going on. It's nonsense. Government discussions happen behind closed doors and without cameras far more often than the inverse. I don't need to have a strong and well informed opinion about local scuffles around the world. It's none of my business and I have my own damn problems to worry about. I certainly don't need to get involved. I just wish our government would think along the same lines I do about that because if we're looking for excuses to print money there is a ton of stuff at home we could be spending it on.
@thatguyoverthere@feld@CSB@useless_idiot I don't wish harm on them at all. I just want them to do their thing and us to do our think. Bankrupting our country and leaving nothing for our kids and grandchildren to provide Europe with security is insane. They're like a 30 year old still living with mom and dad. Time to go and stand on your own.
I understand the reasoning, it works on every level of organization. But I think that would us easy pickings for a better cooperating force outside our families/villages/counties/etc.
@useless_idiot@feld@CSB I'm not saying we shouldn't cooperate at all. But I think co-dependence is not healthy. I also think when we are cooperating, we should make sure that cooperation is somewhat balanced.
peace is more of a gradient. I think if the average citizen is able to live without the fear of a rocket landing on their kids school then yes a quiet genocide is more peaceful. I also don't think you automatically support genocide if you don't support ruining quality of life at home to help Ukraine defend themselves.
