     Technically the 2nd game was supposed to be the last one in the series but they milked it due to the popularity. Gen 2 was a major upgrade over the 1st generation game. If it had the entire island of Kanto the game would be perfect. I'm surprised rom hackers haven't done that now that with modern technology we don't nearly have the storage lmitations from the era.
     
     I liked Gen 3 for what it was at the time but as a sequel Ruby and Sapphire in a lot of ways felt like in the gameplay mechanics but had improvements in others like the tag team battle that made some interesting gameplay mechanics if you mixed the right mons.
     
     I lost interest in pokémon after Gen 3. A couple of my nephew's still like Pokémon and they show me their cards every now and then and I don't recognize any of the monsters. Kind of reminds me of how I"m old and no longer with it.

     @ooignignoktoo @coolboymew @menherahair hackers HAVE done that and a bunch of other stuff, look up pokemon crystal clear. they added in a bunch of cut beta stuff too and integrated a few mechanic improvements from later games

     "hey what if we removed the small handful of flaws from gen 2" is a pretty common romhack idea, iirc those are the only two that stuck with it long enough to get a finished hack done
