@coolboymew eh, zoomers do refuse to play 2D games even if they're gorgeous, citing them being "old" so there's some merit to this line of thought even if 3D games are always inferior. Sanic died with the Dreamcast as far as I'm concerned, though. There's also a financial aspect to it - what's cheaper, having an artist design and animate a sprite frame by frame, or have a 3D model commissioned that you can puppet to your heart's content?
@coolboymew I'm not even a big sprites/SNES graphics shill, and I actually really dislike stuff like Squeenix's HD-2D style, but this is just such obvious nonsense you don't even know how to respond to it.
@ChristiJunior@coolboymew bottom line is Sonic Mania was perfect, many people including myself it is now their favorite Sonic game, and SEGA is leaving money on the table by refusing to make DLC/sequels.
@ChristiJunior@coolboymew You hate the new 2D-HD "style"? You mean the color grading, right? I fucking hate the bloomy brown pissfilter color grading they opt for... But I like the pixel art, etc. It isn't even a new style otherwise; plenty of PS1 JRPGs mixed 3D and 2D.
This new Star Ocean 2D on stock unreal asset hyper-realistic 3D backgrounds thing is new, though. But I've only seen 1 game use it so far.
@olmitch@ChristiJunior@coolboymew I heard it's because some bullshit focus group found out forces sold more so they fucked over the outside devs who made it.
@Pyrrho@coolboymew Even the pixel art doesn't do much for me - I see the awesome character designs games like Triangle Strategy show off in the menus, and just find myself wishing the actual in-game models looked more like that.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is far from a great-looking game overall, but I still much prefer even that to HD-2D because at least the character models look really good.
@ChristiJunior@coolboymew What do you think about Sea of Stars? I might buy it. It looks fucking amazing, imo. And the realtime shadows that render to nn bitmaps that are the same pixel scale as the characters... It's awesome.
@coolboymew on the contrary, doubly so since sprites require manual/traditional animation techniques instead of puppeting. Attached is the spritesheet for Sanic in Sanic 3.
@Pyrrho@coolboymew I'm waiting to hear more feedback from people I actually trust, and want to hear about potential SJW bullshit.
I'll also add that while Chrono Trigger is an absolute masterpiece, for me the graphics and even the pixel art have almost nothing to do with it. There are actually very few SNES games I think look good today, Yoshi's Island for some reason is absolutely gorgeous, and Super Metroid holds up really nicely, but Mario World almost looks less appealing to me than Mario Bros. 3, A Link to the Past looks pretty ugly, and Mario RPG is downright hideous.
