Why are they like that? I've been blissfully unaware of Fediverse for my whole life
-
Briefly, yes. From July 2019 to May 2020. But it caused resource issues at the time (they couldn't afford the hardware they needed) so they removed the protocol to improve performance, since their community was mostly insular anyway.

Torba said Gab would consider other decentralized protocols after they left the Fediverse. Someone should shill Nostr at their devs. I miss some of my frens on there.
-
Gab was in Fediverse?
-
The Fediverse userbase (not Mastodon, but Fediverse) are the distilled essence of banned users everywhere. You could describe them in a lot of ways, but I think the best title for most of them is "jester." The spiciest ones aren't even posting here yet, it's been relatively mild so far
-
It's still mind blowing to me that it existed without my awareness for all these years. What was the point of Gab and other similar attempts at creating a free speech platform? What's the difference between Fediverse and Mastodon?
-
Gab was an early attempt at "free speech" but got attacked mercilessly since it was so centralized, also there's a lot of drama about the founder and userbase (not surprise there).
Mastodon is a specific implementation of the ActivityPub protocol. "Fediverse" refers to the whole family of ActivityPub protocol implementations and includes e.g. Pleroma, Soapbox, Misskey, Friendica, and more.
Mastodon is generally run by trannies who want a hugbox and block anyone who e.g. doesn't play the pronoun game (if you call a man who is pretending to be a woman a man and vice versa, you'll get banned/blocked by most Mastodon instances). The other instances don't really block instances unless they post illegal things (and there are some, but the general Fediverse crowd you're seeing today stays away).
