     @mushroom_soup People wanna feel something when reading fiction. Sex is a shortcut, so is anger. The kinds of things that rile you up like injustice, sadness, bullying, etc. are kinda depressing and hard to see overall. If you aren’t indulging in that “oh man I missed out on school romance and teen love” market then it’s probably pretty hard to sell people on watching early teen characters do anything. They’re dumb, ugly, awkward, un not too charming.

     So all you get is the bland self-insert feeling things for the first time as a standin

     @Bead @mushroom_soup @Kagekokoro @Koropokkur A whole lot of books are that way. I remember reading a lot of old “classics” from the postwar period in school, used to be surprised at how titillating they were for no reason. People even talk about how that Stephen king book had the preteen subway orgy in it, and bend backwards to rationalize how they all totally needed to plow the one girl in the group for the story’s sake.

     People talking about going through all the Nebula award winning stories report just about the same: Lots of perversion, oddly enough pretty distributed across the genders.

     The more I see of older media, the more I’m struck by how dirty and inappropriate it’s always been. The lack of attention to written works let them get away with much worse than you’d see on screen later.
