   There was a scientific consensus that a twin earth was on the other side of the sun, called Vulcan. They were measuring the wobble of the sun. You can observe the centrifugal forces of the planets acting on the sun. They forgot to account for the fact that Earth also is orbiting the sun, and interpreted the wobble they saw as a twin planet directly across the sun from us. Whoops.
