@Pawlicker @kamehamic In fact, I've bought a brand new Rage XL about a month ago. I wanted to use it to work around buggy BIOS that seemed to always allocate 25% of RAM to APU, but it turned out to be an unrelated problem with a specific stick and motherboard when running on specific clock speed.

@Pawlicker I knew it was a th RX 580 even before reading the text. They sell a lot of these in amazon spain too.
I wonder what's the story behind this card still being sold so much.
-
@kamehamic Probably leftover stock from the crypto boom crashing, probably cheaper to make, etc.
ATI kept making the Rage XL for ages as a cheap GPU to toss onto server boards and Matrox sells their old GPU designs as an IP core for server vendors in particular.

@RustyCrab @Pawlicker fx 9590 moment
maybe we should just revisit multi-socket personal computers
can't make a better cpu? fine I'll use four of them

@Pawlicker GPUs have definitely shown some sign of improvement but CPUs are just faking their advancements at this point. "Let's suck 450 watts out of the wall and boil water in the radiator" said the crazy person.

We're going past IBM POWER levels of power drawing and room heating here holy fuck! :senko_shock2:

@RustyCrab 335w tdp? remember when Intel shills made furnace jokes?

@bronze @Pawlicker @RustyCrab i don't see the problem for desktop GPUs, as long as you can keep it cool for extended periods of full load
