Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think:the stevia plant I started from seed earlier this year was starting to push roots through the bottom of the pot, so I put it in a larger pot with brand new compost fresh from the chickens. I'd like to have let the compost sit for a little while longer to avoid rogue seed sprouting, but I figure for an established plant it's probably fine. I also took a handful of partially composted hardwood mulch and laid it out over top of the soil so any seed that does sprout might have a hard time finding it's way to the surface. That's another product I'd rather wait a bit to use, but I pulled some out from the hotter part of the pile so that I know it's at least started breaking down. I have read if it's not sufficiently composted it might lock up resources in the soil below so I hope it works. If I see the plant starting to look weaker I can always replace that compost and use broken down straw over top instead. Jen just prefers the plants that will be on display have a nicer looking mulch.
@thatguyoverthere I heard recently that the woodchip / nitrogen thing is probably a bit of a red herring, you only need to worry about it if you dig it in not if you use it as a mulch.
