Alex Gleason (alex@gleasonator.com)'s status on Saturday, 19-Aug-2023 02:42:03 JST Alex Gleason It's crazy out here dudes. Feel like more people should be talking about this. There is still no end in sight. Next 7 days of forecast are all fever death temperatures. 105 is a big difference from 100.

What difference would that make?
It's a natural occurrence. There's literally nothing you can do about it except attempt to be better prepared next time. -

The cities probably are hotter every few decades because they are larger with more people and more hard surfaces blocking wind and absorbing solar radiation. Seems like if you really want to see trends that are less likely to be localized you would use open fields for your measurements. Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks likes this. -
Matt Hamilton [Maryland] (eriner@noagendasocial.com)'s status on Saturday, 19-Aug-2023 04:11:24 JST Matt Hamilton [Maryland] @alex The weather pattern just doesn't seem unusual to me. To cite two examples from Houston, 1997 and 1990 had similar unrelenting heats in the month of August. The only difference from 2023 is that the high is 4-6 degrees warmer. The underlying weather pattern of prolonged heat without break isn't that unusual. I think the fact that it's hanging around triple digits instead of 97-98 is having an outsized effect on the perception.

Alex Gleason (alex@gleasonator.com)'s status on Saturday, 19-Aug-2023 04:11:25 JST Alex Gleason @eriner I've lived in Texas my whole life. It is often very hot during the summer. But never 105 or above for multiple weeks straight without a break. This is definitely unusual. -
Matt Hamilton [Maryland] (eriner@noagendasocial.com)'s status on Saturday, 19-Aug-2023 04:11:26 JST Matt Hamilton [Maryland] @alex the next line was “more people should be talking about this”. My point was that they aren’t, and there is little reason for them to, because it isn’t unusual in that area for this time of year.

We've also had some pretty big solar storms hit the planet relatively recently. Is none of that extra energy converted to heat? -
feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Saturday, 19-Aug-2023 04:21:50 JST feld Portland hasn't changed enough that suddenly it cranks heat several degrees than what has ever been recorded.
And then there's the ocean temps being +5C. No heat island to blame it on there!Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

Couldn't changing from concrete to asphalt or some other change in materials have an impact too? Say for example existing buildings changing the roofing materials or buildings being replaced with parking lots. -

Santa Noodle ☦️ (bowsacnoodle@poa.st)'s status on Saturday, 19-Aug-2023 04:56:54 JST Santa Noodle ☦️ @thatguyoverthere @feld @alex @eriner Ecological disruption has a far bigger impact on temperature than global atmospheric carbon. Look at the temperatures for "The Twin Cities" in MN, and how it's literally Florida tier but worse winters despite being over a thousand miles north. It's not a huge mystery that cities would be significantly hotter. it's just strange that we'd use them as the indicator for whether or not we are impacting the global climate. It's like putting the thermostat in the oven and then wondering why the electricity bill is so high -
Santa Noodle ☦️ (bowsacnoodle@poa.st)'s status on Saturday, 19-Aug-2023 05:18:12 JST Santa Noodle ☦️ @thatguyoverthere @feld @alex @eriner There's so many issues with methodology, and if you want to try and disprove it they'll ignore you for lack of credentials. If you have credentials and speak out, you lose your standing. It's insane. I DO NOT want asphalt culture and paved over forests. Houses built 100+ years ago had shade trees and cross breeze ventilation with windows facing appropriate directions. Today people shriek about air-conditioning necessities in their homes built without any shade, without sufficient windows, and without even a simple whole-house fan (which would cool the whole thing at night in only 15 minutes for a fraction of the electric of AC).
