Mastodon is just as good of an Instagram alternative as @pixelfed, they support many photo friendly features

The main difference is how @pixelfed is limited to photo/video posts, it’s a different experience

I appreciate the intention of those who mention Pixelfed to a new mastodon user when they post photos, but you shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss Masto or others.

The magic is really how the fediverse embraces migration and finding the best platform that fits you!
