Just listening to the Sunday clip about Lahaina.
The big picture description is that the white man intentionally let it burn down, to take the land from the natives.
My impression is that Lahaina was like the ultimate millennial food cart place, with some hippies like Mike the Shoemaker sprinkled in.
The food cart business started by providing faster and cheaper food than the restaurants, but that business model is changing.
Now it is near restaurant price, without the service.

In 2020, I scored some really cheap tickets to the big island.
I couldn't go, because the federal government paid the state of Hawaii to exclude my family.
They had about a year where 2 weeks quarantine was required.
If the feds hadn't replaced their tourist money, I would have been able to go, and in addition get a good price for lodging in August of 2020, because most Americans would still have been too scared to go, and bid against me for lodging.

@Viking I know. My last flight off the main land was Maui. And it required proof of Vxxx & booster. And contact tracing on the island. As Flight Crew I was exempt as essential. Zuckerburgs island more Fascist and wouldn't let crew out of their room.

Regarding letting it burn down, that has nothing to do with developers (at least directly), but all to do with local and state government, with the dysfunctions of blue cities and states.
On the government worker side, the fire men left without really containing the grass fire.
On the local government side, they have the power to trim the grasslands, if public land, using their own workers, if private land, forcing the owner to keep it trimmed short or get fined.

On the state level, the energy policy is a disaster, the populace is held hostage to the green deity. The price is the highest in the nation, with about 45c per kWh.

For the average American consumer, inflation adjusted electricity price has dropped, but in Hawaii, it has doubled.

Their attempts to reach "net zero carbon" is a disaster for any un-subsidized household. If they stayed with coal, it wouldn't be that much more than the mainland.

Rather than oppressed natives that refuse to sell out to developers, I see the same behavior as the foodcart vendor with an attitude, that will let you choose between 20, 25 or 30% tip for mediocre service, including beeing too lazy to change battery in the buzzer, and let your food get cold while you're standing right in front of him.
My standard operating procedure from now on is that if I buy from a food cart, I will tell them I tip in cash based on promptness and food being hot.

Regarding Mike the Shoemaker, he will sell you a pair of flat sandals for $275, and he is as charismatic as an aging hippie can be, but going there seems to be more a tradition of virtue signalling and conspicuous consumption, than actually getting good footwear.
