     I like to judge purchases by the website. If you’re shopping in the affordable homebuilt market, I want to see a company like this. Crappy website? FAQ full of obscure questions unparsable by normies?

     That means you got a builder who loves his craft and knows his shit. He WILL answer the questions you have and probably help you out w/ your crackpot mods down the line. You want a community around your pet project, you want enthusiasts who live and breathe it and visit the forum every time they get their morning coffee.

     Is there a new generation of white men being trained to take their place? Every time I hear someone who's really embroiled in an industry they talk about boomers being forced out of retirement because literally nobody else can do their job, and even they they don't bother passing on their skills. And it sounds like it's that way with literally every industry.

     This reminds me of the guy who designed the Rotermouse, Don Hillberg. Minimal online presence, web 1.0 level webpages, answers every question about his designs on his YouTube videos.

     @Christmas_Man @boburtle They’re trying to address that around here by using these nobodies as contractors, where they just hire some illiterate to walk up, turn on a laptop, and hopefully be sober enough, or smart enough, to act as the real expert’s hands via the webcam. They are not, but that hasn’t kept them from trying it still

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @Christmas_Man A handful of hyper-focused autistic men with a few decades of experience can quite literally keep an entire industry afloat. Boomers and Gen-Xers were the last generation that still had *some* level of entitlement to a wife (even if they were mostly poor quality at that stage) so their time and energy was freed up to skillmax in their particular industries. You were the first guy that pointed this out a year or two ago but when the current crop of old White men die off they're going to take a *lot* of the infrastructure with it.

     This makes me think of what I've been seeing a lot of lately as I'm looking at returning to the labor force after taking a sabbatical. I work in physical infrastructure/utilities and have noticed that the larger, higher paying companies that have gotten all the government contracts are hiring for cultural fits to their companies and willingness to take on more generic collateral duties vs competence for the specific role they're filling. Smaller companies that are more focused in their field have a narrower window of what they're asking for; they overall ask less from their employees, but they pay less while offering a higher quality of service to their customer for the same cost. It's going to be very interesting to see what happens to critical infrastructure as the high competence, high skill workers eventually all leave the megacorps due to no longer checking all the boxes that HR asks them to.
